What is the Ideal Watering Schedule for New Sod in New York?

One of the most important factors in establishing a healthy lawn is proper watering. Whether you have recently installed new sod or are planning to do so, you need to know the right watering schedule to ensure the best possible outcome. In this blog post, we will discuss the ideal watering schedule for new sod in New York, giving you the tips you need to keep your lawn looking fresh and green all year round.

First 2 weeks

During the initial two weeks after installation, new sod requires deep watering to allow the roots to establish in the soil. The best way to do this is to water twice per day using an irrigation system, once just before sunrise and again right before sunset. Keep in mind that watering while there is some sunlight is best, as it gives the grass blades ample time to dry out, reducing the chances of fungal infections.

Weeks 3-4

After the first two weeks, you can reduce the frequency of watering to once per day (as long as it’s not too hot out), but keep a close eye on your lawn. During weeks three and four, strive to provide your new sod with at least half an inch of water every other day. This will help the roots to grow deeply into the soil, encouraging healthy development. By the end of week three or four, your lawn should be ready for its first mow. It’s important to cut at a height of at least 3.5″, and ideally bag the clippings to avoid smothering your new grass.

Weeks 5-6

During weeks five to six, you can cut back the watering even further. At this point, your sod should be well-established, and the roots should be fully developed. Aim to water every other day, with more as needed if temperatures are hotter or there’s not been much rain.

After Week 6

After eight weeks, your sod should be able to survive on its own with the standard procedure of watering every other day unless temperatures or abnormally dry weather require more. You’ll get a good idea of the ideal watering schedule by observing your grass, which should be lush green and healthy. Keep in mind that over watering is just as damaging as under-watering, so it’s important not to go overboard.
